5 Tips To Buy A Used Car

By John Hayden

Buying a car is an important decision for some people, it is the second most important purchase of their lives. But not everyone wants or can afford a new car. In fact, nearly 40 million used cars are sold every year. The only thing that stops people from choosing a used car is the fear of landing up a lemon. If you are planning to buy a used car, here’s what to look for so that you don’t end up feeling cheated:

Decide on how much you can afford:

Even before you set foot inside a used car dealership, it’s important to decide on how much you can afford to pay every month. Some used car dealers convince buyers to opt for a car that’s beyond their budget causing a whole lot of problems. Some of the things to consider include, how do you plan to use the vehicle, how long will you keep it, etc. And if you plan to replace it in a few years down the line does the car offer good resale value?

Choose a used car dealer with care:

Read reviews about the used car dealer before you buy. Do they offer inspection and does the vehicle come with a guarantee/warranty? If the dealer’s offering too many freebies, he’s probably trying to drive your attention away from the problems. But without a good deal, it makes no sense to choose the dealer especially if you are spoilt for choice.

Check the vehicle history report:

A vehicle inspection report is a must, regardless of the fact that you’ve purchased it from a dealer or a friend. If the dream car you are planning to buy has had a bad history, the sooner you know, the better. Does the car have any liens on it? Was the car ever reported stolen?

Test drive the car:

Test driving is important to make sure that the model and the make is right for you. It also helps to understand the cars condition. Can you get in and out of the car easily? Is there enough legroom and headroom? Can you drive comfortably? Do the car tires have enough tread?

Financing options:

Look for sellers offering easy financing options irrespective of your credit situations.
