Making A Used Car For Sale Actually Sell

By John Hayden

Do you have a used car for sale but are struggling to find a buyer? Don’t worry! You’re not alone. There are so many people who have a good used car for sale but lack the know-how to get it off their lots and into another driver’s hands. As an experienced used car dealer, specializing in Halifax used cars, we can give you a rundown on how to get your sale moving.

Have you correctly assessed your cars worth?

We know you think your car is worth a lot, but is that actually true? Including the wrong price on your listing, even if it’s only slightly off, can put off a lot of potential buyers before they ever get in touch. After all, buyers don’t want to work with sellers who are only looking out for themselves.

Before you set your price, we recommend consulting a number of different resources. Use Kelley Blue Book, NADA guides, or Autotrader. Don’t be afraid to contact a local dealer to get their take on the sale, either.

Do you have all the paperwork handy?

What happens if you get a bite from a potential buyer but don’t have all the paperwork available when they come for a visit? Unfortunately, they might not take you seriously. And why should they? A car is a big investment and a used car for sale has to be backed up with the correct paperwork.

Make sure you have the title, maintenance records, bill of sale, release of liability, warranty documents, and as-is documentation to provide to the potential buyer.

Did you clean your car?

Imagine you’re a buyer. You finally think you found the used car for sale of your dreams, but when you show up to see it, the interior is littered with garbage, and the exterior is covered in dust and scum. Are you going to have a good impression? No!

Make sure the car looks as good as it can before a buyer arrives to take a look. You don’t have to hide serious faults with the car (in fact, you shouldn’t), but you should give it a good shine and make it look presentable. Who’s going to buy a car with McDonalds wrappers all over the backseat?

Are you screening your buyers?

You have your leads, and now is the time to reel them in. Getting a sense of who potential buyers are is only going to speed up the process. So often sales are bogged down by buyers who aren’t serious about buying Halifax used cars; they are just window shopping.

Of course, we all do this when we want to have a lighthearted shopping experience, but when you’re a seller, you want to make sure you have real leads. So, when you get in touch with one for the first time, feel them out and find out how serious they are. They don’t have to buy the used car for sale during their first visit, but it should be a possibility then or by the next visit.

Halifax used cars for sale are a dime a dozen, so make sure you do your homework!
